Food Processors with Shredding Discs

For all of us who love to cook and spend as much time in our kitchens as we possibly can, it is important to have all the right tools to help us create the most delicious and best-looking foods around. While there are many tools you will undoubtedly come to rely on as you discover your skills as a budding chef or a baker, or perhaps even both. Regardless of what subsection of cooking you choose to dive into, one tool that has gained immense popularity with everyone who enjoys cooking, from the most casual kitchen novices all the way to the most experienced chefs, is the ever-useful food processor.

Food processors, in their most common form, is a tool that uses blades inside of a “work bowl”, a bowl, commonly made of plastic, where you put all of your ingredients into. One you put them in, close the top, and click one of the settings on your processor, it will quickly chop or grind your food before your very eyes, and not stop until you say it is finished! By doing all the hard work in chopping and grinding your food, food processors all you to take a moment to take a moment to relax in the middle of your cooking session, or to spend that time preparing another aspect of your meal to get the entire dish done that much more quickly!

These food processors are incredibly handy and versatile. The most modern versions of these convenient kitchen appliances come with all sorts of adjustable and modifiable settings. Even better, these adjustable settings are not restricted only to the push-button setting on the machine, but also to the very blades and bowls that make up the very core of how the machine itself functions in your kitchen. Many, if not all, recent models of food processors have detachable blows, the will allow you to swap out any bowl you believe is too big or too small, in order for you to find that perfect fit to either solely prepare your food in, or to blend up in your processor, cover in some plastic wrap, and stick directly in your fridge for later!

This clever and convenient feature does not only apply to the bowls, but even to the blades of your food processor themselves. In many models, you can swap out different blade attachments to expand the capabilities of your food processor further than they would otherwise be, and maybe even be able to replace some other common kitchen machines with your food processor instead! Almost every food processor comes with the standard S-Shaped Blade, with is the blade most people will associate a food processor with. This blade is made specifically for chopping and grinding up any food your put in it, and the heavy-duty ones can deal with lean meats, nuts, beans, and even some of the most stubborn ingredients!

However, it does not stop with only the S-Shaped Blade. Most of the higher end food processors can be equipped with a wide assortment of attachments that you may not expect, and that you should definitely be using. These include attachments like the dough hook, with allows you to mix up any dough you may want but simply throwing flour, water, and whatever other extra ingredients you may want into your food processor and letting it run. This is great for if you want to make dough without all the arduous kneading, and it is also perfect for doughs including spices, since it will always distribute your spices as evenly as possible.

One of the most essential attachments, however, is the Shredder Disc. You will find it called a few different names both by companies and in the coking community, but everyone will know what you are referring to if you simply say Shredder Disc. This disc sits at the top of your food processor, and once you lock it into place, can spin rapidly at that spot. You are supposed to close the lid to your food processor, turn the blades on, and slowly feed your ingredients to be shredded into the top of your machine through the feed tube. Once you put the through the tube, the spinning disc will do its job, and the shredded remains of your food will be deposited into the work bowl for easy and convenient gathering. Check my other article out on shredding lettuce and other vegetables with a processor.

So, since this is such a useful attachment to have on hand, regardless of if you are making slaws, salads, or any other dish that calls for something to be shredded, like hashbrowns, we are going to take a look at a few food processors you can find on Amazon.com that come prepared with a slicing disc out of the box! How to Cut Chicken Breast into Strips

If you have bought chicken breasts and then realized that you need chicken strips for your recipe, you don’t need to worry. You can easily cut the strips yourself and cook a dish that you like. Here are few tips on how to cut chicken breast into strips:

1. Preparation

Before you begin cutting the chicken breast, make sure that you have gathered everything that you’ll need. Having your tools and the chicken ready will ensure everything runs smoothly. Some of the things you’ll need include:
Chicken breasts: You can buy whole chicken breasts or the ones that are split in half. It depends on the number of people you will be serving. Check out this article to know what to do with the chicken quarters. Before buying the chicken breast, inspect it. Good chicken is cream or deep yellow. If you see grayish color on it, you shouldn’t buy because it has gone bad. Bad smell also signals spoilage. In this case, return it to the store and get a refund. If the chicken breast is good, you can take it home and prepare it.
Chopping board: A wooden chopping board is the best. You can easily clean it by hand and in the dishwasher. Since it’s easier on the edges, you can resurface it if need be. It is also important to have a cutting board that you use only for meat and to regularly clean it to avoid diseases. Notably, maple wood has antibacterial properties thus having a chopping board made from this material will be the healthier choice. It is also likely to last for a lifetime.
Knife: A good set of knives will make it easier to slice up the chicken. When choosing the right knife, make sure that it’s has a sharp edge that can be sharpened if it becomes dull. It should also be made good quality stainless steel to make sure it doesn’t rust. The handle should be non-slip so that you don’t drop it when cutting slippery chicken.

Other Tools: are a freezing bag and metal tray.

2. Freeze the chicken breasts

  • Wash the chicken, dry with a paper towel then chill the chicken in a refrigerator. Chilled chicken is more firm; therefore, it won’t slip when you are cutting it.
  • Freezing the chicken breast is especially important if you want very thin strips. If the chicken is fresh, soak it in chilled water. Here are the steps:
  • Put the chicken piece in the freezer bag
  • Remove all air from the Ziploc freezer bag and shut it tight.
  • To make the process faster, put the bag on a metal tray and chill for an hour.
  • Remove the chicken breasts from the freezer and check if it is ready. If a knife easily cuts through it, it is firm enough to cut into thin strips. If the chicken is still soft, return it to the refrigerator until it is ready.

3. Locate the grain

Place the chicken breast on the cutting board and trim the fat. Then locate the grain on the chicken and place it parallel to the chopping board. Chicken has long fibers of distinct lines running through them and can be difficult to chew through. Slicing through the fibers at this state makes chicken softer and easier to chew.
Cut the chicken into strips
Firmly hold the chicken breast on the chopping board. Using a very sharp knife will make this process easier. Place the knife blade at a 45 degree slant against the grain of the chicken breast and pull your knife against it horizontally. You don’t have to slice every piece at that angle though. The angle of your knife will determine how long the fibers in the chicken will be, which will affect its tenderness after cooking. However, don’t slice too much against the grain as the chicken will be too soft if you do this. When cutting into slices, hold the breast with one hand. To avoid cutting yourself, curl your fingertips before slicing the chicken in long even strokes. Apply force downward as you cut the chicken into ¼ inch strips.

Enjoy the chicken

Knowing how to cook chicken strips is just as important as knowing how to cut chicken breasts into strips. After all, you’re not going to eat raw chicken strips! One way to cook the strips is by baking them. You’ll need to cut two pounds of chicken breast into strips. Then gather other ingredients including a small diced onion, two minced garlic cloves, a quarter cup of butter, a tablespoon of minced parsley, a teaspoon of minced fresh dill, half a teaspoon of dry oregano and a pinch of salt. The process is pretty simply. Grease the chicken strips and place them in a baking dish. Then sauté the garlic and onion in butter and add other dry ingredients. Pour the mixture over the chicken and bake at 530 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with rice or another dish that you like.
Another recipe involves soaking the strips in milk for 20 minutes. Then put some flour in a separate bowl. Add some cayenne pepper or lots of black pepper in the flour and mix the dry ingredients together. Heat some vegetable oil in a skillet. Then remove some soaked strips from the container they’re soaked in and put it the flour mixture. Coat the pieces and cook them in the skillet a few batches at a time. Cook until golden brown then turn them over to cook the raw side. When they are ready remove them from the skillet and drain on a container covered with paper towel. Continue cooking in batches until they are finished.

Final Verdict

It’s important for every foodie to know how to cut chicken breasts into strips. There are a lot of varieties of dishes that you could cook with the strips including some great stir fry. On a weekend night you’ll be able to quickly prepare the chicken strips as the narrow pieces tend to cook faster. Why not learn how to cut the strips now?

How to Shred Lettuce with a Food Processor

No matter what you need it for, from a fine slaw to go along with you barbequed meat or for a salad of its very own, shredded lettuce can be used as part of a very tasty and very easy side dish, or as a part of a main course! So, when you are looking to level up your meals quickly, easily, and most importantly, cheaply, you really can’t go wrong by tossing a bit of shredded lettuce into an already great vegetable dish, or by combining it with some cherry tomatoes and goat cheese and tossing it in your dressing of choice to create a tasty and easy salad as a side for your meal.

So, then the question becomes, how do you do it? Chopping it by hand does not seem very quick or convenient at all. And, you’re right! It is not, unless you already have some very good skill with your kitchen knife. So, for the rest of us average people, who would take a while to be able to clumsily shred cabbage with nothing more than our wits and our knives, how can we turn this tedious task into something more convenient for us? I’m happy to say that I have your answer! There are many viable alternatives to using a knife manually for shredding your lettuce, and one of those happens to be a very common household tool you might already have in your kitchen: the food processor!

I know it may seem unlikely at first, but it’s true! The food processor you have in your kitchen, when given the right attachments, can shred anything from lettuce to red cabbage, and more! Food processors are an extremely versatile tool that can be used for a great variety of kitchen tasks, provided you know how to properly utilize them and have all the needed attachments. So, with this capable tool in your hands, we are going to look at how you can use it to do exactly that: shred not only lettuce, by any number of other fantastic foods that you can use in your daily cooking!

Preparation

The first step is to ensure you have everything clean and ready, just like when you are going to prepare any other meal. So, take whatever food processor you have on hand, and carefully disassemble it so that you have taken out the bowl and whatever blade attachment you had put in it before. If you normally clean it after every use, that is perfect! Just give them a quick rinse to make sure there is no dust and set them aside. If you haven’t washed them since the last time you used them, there is a few ways to clean them.

For the bowl, you’re perfectly fine filling it up with hot, soapy water, letting it sit for a few minutes to soak, and then scrubbing the sides with a sponge to really get everything off. Or, if that sounds like too much work and you have a bit of time on your hands, just throw it into your dishwasher and start a cycle! The vast majority of food processor bowls are dishwasher-safe, so you will not need to worry about damaging it, as long as you put it on the lower rack. Just throw it in with your other dishes and you can not only clean the processor bowl, but also clean all of the dishes and utensils you’ll need to set the table for dinner!

For the blade, however, you are probably going to want to be a lot more careful than just tossing it in your dishwasher with all of your fragile plates or scrubbing it hard in the sink. Both of those choices have the potential to end very, very badly for you. So, instead, what can you do to clean it? It is really quite simple! To simply give it a good once-over, run some hot water from your kitchen tap, or preferably submerge the blade into hot water, apply some soap, and gently rub along the blade to get any remaining food or dirt off. Take extra care not to cut yourself, and if you have any good quality dish gloves, you may want to wear those just in case.

If you want to give it a thorough cleaning, however, it’s also very simple. After you clean it with soap and water like we described above, rinse it off, dry it, and then pour or rub some rubbing alcohol along the blades. This will sanitize the blades well, and ensure that any fine food or dust particles that may have desperately clung to the blades while you were washing it finally get taken off. Once this is done, just run it under a little bit of water again, dry it, and there you go, it’s clean!

Shredding

This is actually the simpler part! Once you have your clean food processor bowl, you will want to buy a shredding attachment for your food processor, if you do not have one already. It should look a little bit like the side of a cheese grater, with metal protrusions sticking up from the top side of the shredding disc. What you need to do is attach this to the top of your food processor bowl, ensuring that it is fully locked into place. If you still have your owner’s manual, that would be a great place to look for instructions if you’re unclear of what to do.

Once you have it installed, you are pretty much ready to start shredding! Put the lid on and feed small chunks of lettuce, or whatever other food you want to shred, through the feeding tube at the top of the food processor, and watch as it is shredded and deposited into the bowl, underneath, waiting for you to collect it!

So, if you’re looking for an easy way to help you shred your lettuce that lets you save time and effort so that you can use that time for more productive things, shredding lettuce with a food processor is definitely the way to go! So, go buy a shredder attachment if you haven’t got one already, and happy cooking!

This is a natural part of the lifespan of almost any kitchen appliance, and it is almost certainly something you have encountered before with anything from toasters, to blenders, to coffee makers, and food processors are no exception either. Every machine will have difficulties throughout its time in your kitchen, but your ability to diagnose and subsequently correct those problems can have a huge impact on how much you end up spending in your kitchen. You throw everything into the bowl, and confidently hit the “on” button like you have so many times before. However, instead of hearing the familiar whirring of the blades spinning to life, followed by the sound of your food being finely ground up, there is only silence, and your food remains unacceptably whole. You try pressing the button a few more times, but nothing changes. You give the machine a few good smacks on the sides, but even that doesn’t fix it for you. So, you are left wondering: what on earth can you do about this now? Because missing out on the delicious meal you had planned tonight is NOT an option.

When you see this red light, that will let you know that there is definitely a problem that needs to be dealt with, as if you did not know that already. Basically, this little red light is the machine’s way of telling you that something is wrong with it. While it is very unfortunate that your machine is having some troubles, this red light indicates that the machine is at least working well enough to diagnose that something is wrong, so there is still hope! And if you are the type of person who enjoys troubleshooting and finding solutions to problems, this will be a very fun process for you.

There are a few things that could go wrong. There are more possibilities, but it is typically one of the basic things: a problem with the electronics, a problem with the wiring, or a problem with the physically parts of the machine. If you have a particularly high-tech food processor, with a multitude of different buttons and settings, chances are there is some kind of electronic system in there that is responsible for making everything work, and these can be particularly sensitive to damage. Every food processor, as long as it runs of electricity, uses wires.

These wires connect the buttons to the blades and other parts of the machine, and are responsible for actually transporting the energy needed for things to run. These are also susceptible to damage, and if one of these is frayed, twisted or severed, you are looking at some very involved wiring work that you might want to leave up to someone who knows what they’re doing, or else you risk an electrical fire somewhere down the line. So, unless you have the experience with this particular problem, ask for help.
If something is wrong with the machine physically, such as the blades being warped, jammed, or otherwise damaged, there isn’t much you can do at home about that either without possessing some serious in-depth skills. So now may be a good time to check up on your warranty, if you bought your food processor with one, and make a few calls to Kitchenaid! You can typically get a replacement part sent, or, if you are lucky, be able to have your food processor fixed or replaced entirely with a new working one!

A common issue for kitchen appliances, that you may have come across before in the past, can be the plug for the machine itself. Oftentimes, if you are not careful about how you pull the appliance’s plug out of the electrical outlet, you can end up wearing it down over time and eventually severing the connection entirely, causing issues with powering.

If you often find yourself pulling on the cord to take it out of the wall instead of firmly grabbing the head of the plug to pull it out of the socket, there is a good chance this could be your issue. Like we said, do not go messing with wires unless you have the proper training to do so, but you can practice taking care of your machines for the next time. Remember to always grasp the plug by the plastic head that plugs into the wall, and firmly pull it straight out of the wall socket in order to ensure no damage is done to your food processor’s plug.
Still Not Working?

If you try all of these solutions, don’t have a warranty available to you, and you still just cannot seem to get your food processor working no matter what you try and no matter how many smacks you give it, it may very well be time to retire your machine and buy a new one. If you think that this machine lasted you a very short amount of time, it may be worth spending a little bit more money in the future to get a higher-quality appliance that will last you for years and years to come. But, if you’ve had your current processor for years, found it reliable, and are sad to see it go, you can always buy another one just like it!

Onion Goggles That Will Fit Over Glasses

No one can deny it, chopping onions can really be a pain. That’s not because they are difficult to chop more than any other vegetable, or because it happens to be any more tedious than any other food you may need to cut. Everyone knows why it sucks so much: cutting Onions can make you cry more than the ending of Marley & Me, and you will not even get the same outlook on life that you would get after watching that movie. So, naturally, unless you want to keep crying every time you need to prepare a delicious meal, you will need to find a solution.

People will tell you a bunch of tricks, from chewing gum while you chop your onions to just making sure you breathe through your mouth, but these so-called “kitchen hacks” all have one thing in common: They never really seem to work when you need them to. Sure, maybe they work when you are cutting that small onion for a salad, but when it’s the morning before the big game and you are chopping up a couple of huge onions to add to your chili for that night, you always seem to need to take a few steps away from the counter so that you can let the tears subside. Doing this multiple times just for one meal adds a lot of unnecessary minutes to your cooking, minutes that could be spent doing other things that are not wiping tears away from your irritated eyes.

You may or may not know the science behind it, but it is actually quite interesting. Essentially, there are unstable chemicals in onions that irritate your eyes when they come in contact with them. Onions, when cut, produce a chemical irritant called syn-propanethial-S-oxide. This chemical is the result of chemical instability that results from an onion being cut, which scientists say is because of a particular enzyme in the onion that prevents it from stabilizing. This irritant floats up to your eyes and interacts with some glands that your eye uses to help in its daily function. So, in response to your body feeling something in your eyes trying to mess with your glands, your body triggers one of the defense mechanisms it has to keep things out of your eyes: you start tearing up. A lot. While your body is only trying to look out for itself, this can still be very annoying when you’re in a rush to prepare an amazing meal on a time limit.

So, that leaves you with one option, really: kitchen googles. While you may not find them in every kitchen, every kitchen would greatly benefit from having a pair of these on hand for when they are needed. How they work is incredibly simple, I probably do not even need to tell you. You just put them on before you start chopping away at your onions, and then once you getting to slicing, you will be overjoyed that you have managed to cut your way through an entire onion without having to feel that familiar sting in your eyes and put up with those tears streaming down your face that make you look like you just saw the world’s saddest television drama. Just an incredibly simply pair of durable plastic goggles can save you from a lot of pain and irritation in the kitchen, as well as saving you a lot of time, since you no longer have to spend time wiping your eyes dry or stepping away from the cutting board to try and stop the tears.

However, you may find some of these goggles to be quite slender, or you will find some versions of them that have individual, separate parts that go over each eye. And those are well and good, but if you have glasses that you cannot see without, those are simply not an option for you. So, for those of us who needed our glasses, I have found a few options for you to consider when you are looking for kitchen goggles, that will allow you to wear your glasses underneath them so that you can actually see what you are cutting, and not have to deal with the tears in your eyes any longer!

Why You Should Buy a Cuisinart Food Processor with Dough Blades

Cuisinart food processors with dough blades are versatile and easy to use. Whether you want to chop, shred, blend or mince, you can do it all using this powerful machine. Despite its power, the processor is only 17 inches when assembled. It comes in an attractive box containing the following items:

powerful motor base
work bowl
cover with a huge feed tube
pusher assembly
sharp metal blade
plastic dough blade
3 slicing discs
shredding disc
detachable stem
plastic spatula
cleaning tool

Assembling the Processor

Assembling cuisinart food processors with dough blades can be tricky as there are so many things to put together. If you hate fumbling, you could always read the booklet or watch the DVD. It’s not rocket science. Simply put the base on a table that’s close to an electrical outlet. Then place the transparent bowl on it. Fit the central tube and turn the bowl to lock into position. Put the blade over the shaft and push the central part down. Then cover the bowl and use locking devices on the lid to secure it before sliding the pusher assembly over the tube. That’s it.

Using the processor

Now that you’re done with the hardest part (assembling), you can proceed to the fun part. The processor can be used to prepare a variety of dishes. To save time, organize the recipe steps then begin processing the ingredients in the order that you’ll need them. It’s time saving to process dry ingredients such as parsley, garnish, and nut first. Then wipe the bowl before moving on to the next task. Proceed to any soft ingredients that you might need. To avoid making a mess, add liquids through the small tube when the processor is running.

White Bread Recipe

You’ll need two teaspoons of yeast, two tablespoons of sugar, 1/3rd cup of warm water, and 10 cups all purpose flour. Also make sure that you have a stick of unsaturated butter, three tablespoons of salt, three cups of cool water, cooking spray and milk.

Begin by dissolving the yeast and sugar into water and let it stand for five minutes. Then put the dough blade in the bowl and add butter, salt and flour. Add cool water to the mixture of yeast and mix. With the processor on, put the liquid in the feed tube as fast as it’s absorbed by the flour and processes until the dough forms a ball. Remove the dough and shape into a ball. Then place into a plastic bag and allow it to rise in a warm place for about an hour. Coat loaf pans with cooking spray and use the cuisinart scale to divide the dough into four equal parts. Preheat your over to 375°F and brush milk over the loaves. Bake for 35 minutes. Then remove and allow to it to cool before digging in.

How to Use the Processor Safely

It’s important to make sure that you and others around are safe when using the processor. Here’s what you can do to prevent injury:

Handle the discs and blade carefully as they have sharp edges
Don’s put a blade or disc on the shaft until the working bowl is secured
Ensure that the blade is down the motor shaft
When processing food use a pusher, not your fingers!
Don’t drop the metal blade from the bowl when emptying it.

Cleaning and Storing

Once you are done using the processor, clean and put on counter ready for next use. Make sure that you unplug it and don’t leave the pusher assemble secured as this could damage its on/off mechanism. Just as you would with sharp knives, keep the blades where children can’t reach them. With the exception of the base, you can put all items in the dish washer.

Common Problems and their Solutions

If you are using this processor for the first time, you might experience some problems. This is nothing to worry about as here are quick solutions that will ensure that you continue enjoying the process. For example, your food might be unevenly chopped. The problem could be that you are processing too much food at a time or the machine is running continuously. To correct this problem, pulse the processor on and off and make sure the pieces are ½ inch or smaller.

If liquid is dripping on the motor base, remove the bowl immediately you finish processing. Then remove the blade. If you remove the two at the same time, the blade drops drown resulting into the leaks. Leaking could also be a result of too much liquid. Do not add more than four cups of liquid, especially if it is thin. You can, however, process a lot of thicker liquid like pancake batter.

If the slices are slanted, adjust the feed tune and put even pressure on the processor’s pusher. When sliced food piles on the side of the bowl, don’t panic. Just make sure that you regularly remove the disc to out the sliced food.

Pros

The processor’s metal blade is strong enough to chop fruit and vegetable, different kinds of meat and cheese. It allows you to control the texture of the mixture too.
If you are always mixing dough, the dough blades will cut the time spend in half.
The locking devices on the blades prevents sticky mixtures from pushing the blade upwards
The booklet comes with recipes

Cons

The main and only con of this product is that it is very difficult to assemble. If you aren’t patient enough to do it, you might give up.

Warranty

The processor is sold free of defects, and it is expected to work properly five years after purchase. The warranty provided covers the motor but excludes parts in the motor base assembly such as work bowl and cover, all electrical components, and base. It is important for all customers to fill and return the registration card which will show date of purchase. If you don’t have proof of the date you made the purchase, the company will use the date of manufacture.

Conclusion

Cuisinart food processors with dough blades are made with the best food processing technology and have the largest work bowls in the market. The large feed tubes will make processing food quicker and efficient. It is an investment worth making.
