How to Shred Lettuce with a Food Processor

No matter what you need it for, from a fine slaw to go along with you barbequed meat or for a salad of its very own, shredded lettuce can be used as part of a very tasty and very easy side dish, or as a part of a main course! So, when you are looking to level up your meals quickly, easily, and most importantly, cheaply, you really can’t go wrong by tossing a bit of shredded lettuce into an already great vegetable dish, or by combining it with some cherry tomatoes and goat cheese and tossing it in your dressing of choice to create a tasty and easy salad as a side for your meal.

So, then the question becomes, how do you do it? Chopping it by hand does not seem very quick or convenient at all. And, you’re right! It is not, unless you already have some very good skill with your kitchen knife. So, for the rest of us average people, who would take a while to be able to clumsily shred cabbage with nothing more than our wits and our knives, how can we turn this tedious task into something more convenient for us? I’m happy to say that I have your answer! There are many viable alternatives to using a knife manually for shredding your lettuce, and one of those happens to be a very common household tool you might already have in your kitchen: the food processor!

I know it may seem unlikely at first, but it’s true! The food processor you have in your kitchen, when given the right attachments, can shred anything from lettuce to red cabbage, and more! Food processors are an extremely versatile tool that can be used for a great variety of kitchen tasks, provided you know how to properly utilize them and have all the needed attachments. So, with this capable tool in your hands, we are going to look at how you can use it to do exactly that: shred not only lettuce, by any number of other fantastic foods that you can use in your daily cooking!

Preparation

The first step is to ensure you have everything clean and ready, just like when you are going to prepare any other meal. So, take whatever food processor you have on hand, and carefully disassemble it so that you have taken out the bowl and whatever blade attachment you had put in it before. If you normally clean it after every use, that is perfect! Just give them a quick rinse to make sure there is no dust and set them aside. If you haven’t washed them since the last time you used them, there is a few ways to clean them.

For the bowl, you’re perfectly fine filling it up with hot, soapy water, letting it sit for a few minutes to soak, and then scrubbing the sides with a sponge to really get everything off. Or, if that sounds like too much work and you have a bit of time on your hands, just throw it into your dishwasher and start a cycle! The vast majority of food processor bowls are dishwasher-safe, so you will not need to worry about damaging it, as long as you put it on the lower rack. Just throw it in with your other dishes and you can not only clean the processor bowl, but also clean all of the dishes and utensils you’ll need to set the table for dinner!

For the blade, however, you are probably going to want to be a lot more careful than just tossing it in your dishwasher with all of your fragile plates or scrubbing it hard in the sink. Both of those choices have the potential to end very, very badly for you. So, instead, what can you do to clean it? It is really quite simple! To simply give it a good once-over, run some hot water from your kitchen tap, or preferably submerge the blade into hot water, apply some soap, and gently rub along the blade to get any remaining food or dirt off. Take extra care not to cut yourself, and if you have any good quality dish gloves, you may want to wear those just in case.

If you want to give it a thorough cleaning, however, it’s also very simple. After you clean it with soap and water like we described above, rinse it off, dry it, and then pour or rub some rubbing alcohol along the blades. This will sanitize the blades well, and ensure that any fine food or dust particles that may have desperately clung to the blades while you were washing it finally get taken off. Once this is done, just run it under a little bit of water again, dry it, and there you go, it’s clean!

Shredding

This is actually the simpler part! Once you have your clean food processor bowl, you will want to buy a shredding attachment for your food processor, if you do not have one already. It should look a little bit like the side of a cheese grater, with metal protrusions sticking up from the top side of the shredding disc. What you need to do is attach this to the top of your food processor bowl, ensuring that it is fully locked into place. If you still have your owner’s manual, that would be a great place to look for instructions if you’re unclear of what to do.

Once you have it installed, you are pretty much ready to start shredding! Put the lid on and feed small chunks of lettuce, or whatever other food you want to shred, through the feeding tube at the top of the food processor, and watch as it is shredded and deposited into the bowl, underneath, waiting for you to collect it!

So, if you’re looking for an easy way to help you shred your lettuce that lets you save time and effort so that you can use that time for more productive things, shredding lettuce with a food processor is definitely the way to go! So, go buy a shredder attachment if you haven’t got one already, and happy cooking!
